When a user texts their coffee order, a robotic arm grabs a cup, brews the requested order and tops it off with a personalized note in the foam with edible ink. In April 2012, Zipwhip created the “Textspresso,” a Jura Impressa XS90 espresso machine with added technology to accept coffee orders via text message. In 2014, the company pivoted to focus on business-to-consumer texting communications. In 2013, Zipwhip became the first “text carrier,” allowing landline owners to text-enabled their existing phone number for the first time. Zipwhip began in 2008 as a consumer-based software application that allowed anyone to send text messages from their personal computers or other Internet-connected devices, such as tablets, using their existing mobile number. Current customers include Twilio, OpenMarket, San Antonio Spurs, Seattle Seahawks, and Cumulus Media. Over 35,000 customers use Zipwhip’s software or API. mobile carrier networks including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular. Zipwhip has direct connectivity to all major U.S. Users can access Zipwhip’s software via web app, desktop app or mobile app. The service also provides MMS, templates with custom fields, custom signatures, group messaging and messaging and keyword reports. With Zipwhip, users can setup automated features such as auto replies, keywords and schedule messages. Zipwhip provides cloud-based SMS software and API that allows businesses to text-enable their existing toll-free, landline or VoIP number. The company has raised over $95 million from Goldman Sachs, M12, OpenView, Voyager Capital, Ronin Capital, Inteliquent and GCI. As of 2019, Zipwhip has text-enabled over 3.3 million phone numbers. The company was found in 2008 by John Lauer, John Larson and Anthony Riemma. Zipwhip is a Seattle, Washington- based SaaS company that provides conversational text messaging for businesses using their existing numbers.
